HMRC have requested a meeting - Should I go?
If HMRC launch an investigation into your tax and VAT affairs, they invariably request that you attend a voluntary interview. Under no circumstances should you attend such a meeting unless legally enforced (see below).
Attending an interview with the taxman in an exploratory or ongoing investigation is definitely NOT in your best interests. Get on the phone and contact our Tax Investigation Specialist IMMEDIATELY.
There are only two circumstances where you are compelled to attend an interview with the taxman. The first is in the case of a Code of Practice 9 tax investigation. You will need our Tax Investigation specialist with you.
The second is in the case of a criminal tax investigation. It is imperative that you have professional legal representation, as this interview will be done under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) 1984 procedures.
We will handle your HMRC Interview
Very few accountants have the specialist experience to guide you safely through the dangerous waters of an HMRC tax investigation. In most cases, the do not know what the extent of the taxman's investigative powers are and so are unable to give give the correct advice. We will work with you and your accountant. Once we have taken control of the investigation, you will have no direct contact with HMRC.
We are worth our weight in gold
Without exception, when the taxman comes knocking, he wants to recover tax and VAT. We save companies literally tens of thousands of pounds - a fraction of the fees that we charge. In many cases, we have saved individuals from criminal proceedings.
