Warning - If you are under investigation for tax irregularities pick up the phone and talk to our tax investigation advisor straight away. You must not talk to HMRC without representation otherwise you may inadvertently give them information that they will use against you.
HMRC’s Civil Investigation of Fraud (CIF) teams undertake investigations into suspected serious fraud under Code of Practice 9 (COP 9) using a Contractual Disclosure Facility, CDF.
Local CIF teams deal with ‘smaller’ cases (from £75,000 - £500,000) and larger cases (£500,000+) are dealt with by HMRC’s Specialist Investigations directorate (SI).
HMRC do not conduct these investigations randomly. If you are being investigated for tax fraud, HMRC have hard evidence against you and will endeavour to claim the maximum amount of tax and penalties possible. During a COP 9 fraud investigation, if they discover that you have given false or incomplete information on your tax affairs, it may lead to a criminal prosecution and a spell in prison.
In brief, this means that you come completely clean and confess to all the tax fraud that has happened. In return, you cannot be prosecuted for criminal tax evasion and you will receive reduced penalties for your cooperation. You will need to pay back any tax that is owed.
Using our tax services, you will need to supply certified statements detailing how the fraud occurred and what the amounts were. You will also need to give details of all bank accounts and credit cards that you control.
The good news is that a properly handled COP 9 disclosure investigation means that there is almost no contact between you and HMRC. All contact is through us. With our expert tax advisors on your side, the investigation will be dealt with quickly and efficiently, minimising the level of stress and worry such an investigation inevitably brings.
